Drug and Alcohol Addiction
Addiction is a complex brain disorder characterized by compulsive seeking and use of a substance despite harmful consequences. Long term addiction can cause chemical changes in the brain which interfere with a person’s ability to think clearly, exercise good judgment, control behavior, and feel normal without the use of the substance.
Signs and Symptoms

Repeatedly neglecting responsibilities

Alcohol use in dangerous situations such as driving, when taking prescription medication against the advice of a doctor, operating machinery, etc.

Legal problems due to drinking· Continued drinking despite relationship problems

Drinking to de-stress

An increased tolerance of alcohol

Loss of control while drinking, such as drinking more than you wanted
Warning Signs of Drug and Alcohol Abuse

Eyes that are bloodshot or pupils that are constricted or dilated

Frequent nosebleeds can be an indication of snorting drugs (meth, cocaine)

Changes in appetite or sleep pattern

Sudden weight loss or gain

Seizures without a history of epilepsy

Deterioration in personal grooming or physical appearance
-
Injuries/accidents and they won’t or can’t tell you how they got hurt
-
Unusual smells on breath, body, or clothing
